The steady assault in the West against Islam and Muslims is not limited to propaganda. In recent weeks we have witnessed the release of a video clip of the "Innocence of Muslims" produced in the United States and the cartoon satire of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed published in France.
These productions are the outcome of efforts by lone wolves to use the cover of democracy and free speech to incite hatred and violence against the "other". The governments of the United States and France played no part in producing them.
In addition to this lone wolf propaganda, hatred intended for Muslims was directed at worshipers in a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin resulting in several death by gunfire in August of this year. The deadly shootings captured national attention followed by cries for documentation of these hate crimes and increased efforts to promote the pluralism and tolerance that are traditional hallmarks of democracy.
Hate speech and hate crimes are not typical of popular sentiment. Moderate Jews, Christians and all other minority groups who have suffered their own similar historical abuses can fearlessly confront the growing menace of hate by speaking out on behalf of pluralism and Muslim tolerance. Make your voice heard.
